What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a primary health-care profession that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and overall management of conditions that are due to problems with the joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves, especially related to the spine.
Chiropractic treatment mainly involves safe, often gentle, specific spinal manipulation to free joints in the spine or other areas of the body that are not moving properly. Apart from manipulation, chiropractors may use a variety of techniques including ice, heat, ultrasound, exercise and acupuncture as well as advice about posture and lifestyle.
Although chiropractors are best known for treating back and neck pain, which they do very well, patients also consult chiropractors regarding a range of other, related conditions.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

Chiropractic adjustment is a procedure in which trained specialists (chiropractors) use their hands or a small instrument to apply a controlled, specific force to a spinal joint. The goal of chiropractic adjustment, also known as spinal manipulation, is to correct structural alignment and improve your body's physical function by relieving nerve interference.

What techniques do we use?

At Park Street Chiropractic Clinic we use a number of highly effective adjustment techniques such as Diversified, SOT Activator, dry needling and different forms of soft tissue releases.

What about the "crack?"

Many people are particularly interested in the cracking or popping sound that occurs when we adjust a joint.  This is simply a small release of air in the joint and is perfectly harmless.  In fact, it doesn't matter whether it clicks or not.  Research showed that the click, or absence of it, made no difference to how quickly people got better.  So if it clicks, don't worry; if it doesn't click, don't worry!

The research did show, however, that patients were slightly more satisfied when they heard a click! Perhaps people secretly like all the clicking!

First Visit

Patient Forms

From the first minute you walk into our clinic, the emphasis will be on you. We are dedicated to providing you and your family a world class service. We will request you fill our patient form. This paperwork provides us with general information about yourself and your current health.

Next you will have a consultation with our Chiropractor to discuss your health-related problems, concerns, as well as potential treatment options. Your first visit is designed for the Chiropractor to learn more about you, your condition and your expectations to determine whether chiropractic care will meet your goals.

Your Chiropractor will perform a complete chiropractic examination testing your reflexes as well as other standard neurologic, orthopaedic, postural, and physical examinations. No treatment will be performed in the clinic without your full, informed consent.

X-Ray Studies

Your specific condition may require us to take x-rays to get a full evaluation. X-rays help us rule out more serious conditions or assist us in developing the most effective treatment plan for you. Most patients are amazed once they see their x-rays, and can often identify their misalignments and degeneration themselves.

Second Visit/Report of Findings

Once all the information and examinations have been performed, your Chiropractor will give you a report of findings to answer the three most popular questions: Can you help me? How long will it take? How much is it going to cost?

After discussing with you your history and your goals, examining your spine and other soft tissue related areas and reviewing any x-rays or tests, your Chiropractor will discuss recommendations with you.

If you have a condition that requires care with other providers, the doctor will tell you. If your Chiropractor believes we can help you, we will recommend treatment and a wellness program.

What to expect on my chiropractic journey

The first challenge is to get you out of pain, and the second challenge after that is to correct, strengthen and rehabilitate your spine and get it and your muscles and nerves working well together. The third challenge is all about maintaining good spinal health and keeping you from falling back to where you were when you first came to the clinic.

How many adjustments will I need?

This depends on the severety of the problem and how long it has been there for.

Who benefits from Chiropractic?

Everyone from newborn babies, kids, pregnant women to seniors. Your nervous system controls every single cell in your body and the spinal cord relays the messages from the brain to the body and the body to the brain. If your spine is not functioning properly it can interfere with that communication and eventually lead to a symptom.

Chiropractic and pregnancy

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Chiropractic care during pregnancy is vital to the normal physiological function of both the mother and the baby in pregnancy and birth. Chiropractic adjustment during pregnancy can help to shorten labour by allowing more room for the baby to get into the optimal foetal position. It can alleviate morning sickness and minimise joint pain and inflammation. It is perfectly safe to have Chiropractic when pregnant.

Chiropractic and babies

Our clinic and chiropractic in general have experienced an increasing number of referrals from midwives, health visitors and parents seeking care for their new born children. With 10 years of experience we love treating babies and children at Park Street Chiropractic Clinic and really believe we can give them the best start in life! Whatever the age of your child, chiropractic care can be a safe and effective therapy. We recommend all Mums to bring their little ones in for a free spinal check-up to make sure they are as good as they can be as symptom can be very misleading.

Is the profession regulated?

In common with medical practitioners and dentists, the chiropractic profession is regulated by law. The Chiropractors Act 1994 provides statutory regulation for the profession and the title 'chiropractor' is protected under this legislation. The statutory regulator is the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and it is illegal to practise as a chiropractor without being registered with the GCC.
