Frequently Asked Questions
What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a primary health-care profession that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and overall management of conditions that are due to problems with the joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves, especially related to the spine.
Chiropractic treatment mainly involves safe, often gentle, specific spinal manipulation to free joints in the spine or other areas of the body that are not moving properly. Apart from manipulation, chiropractors may use a variety of techniques including ice, heat, ultrasound, exercise and acupuncture as well as advice about posture and lifestyle.
Although chiropractors are best known for treating back and neck pain, which they do very well, patients also consult chiropractors regarding a range of other related conditions.
What is a chiropractic adjustment?
Chiropractic adjustment is a procedure in which trained specialists (chiropractors) use their hands or a small instrument to apply a controlled, specific force to a spinal joint. The goal of chiropractic adjustment, also known as spinal manipulation, is to correct structural alignment and improve your body’s physical function by relieving nerve interference.
What techniques do we use?
At Park Street Chiropractic Clinic we use a number of highly effective adjustment techniques such as Diversified, SOT, Activator, dry needling and different forms of soft tissue releases.
What about the 'crack?'
Many people are particularly interested in the cracking or popping sound that occurs when we adjust a joint. This is simply a small release of air in the joint and is perfectly harmless. In fact, it doesn’t matter whether it clicks or not. Research showed that the click, or absence of it, made no difference to how quickly people got better. So if it clicks, don’t worry; if it doesn’t click, don’t worry!
The research did show, however, that patients were slightly more satisfied when they heard a click! Perhaps people secretly like all the clicking!
What should I wear for my adjustments?
When you first see us as a new patient, your chiropractor will need to be able to assess your spine and other joints and muscles properly. This means that you may be asked to undress – all female patients will be given a gown to put over their undergarments, which opens at the back. If you would be more comfortable, please feel free to wear shorts and a sports vest, as long as the spine can be seen.
For regular adjustments you will usually be able to keep all your clothes on. There are some exceptions, such as if a particular body part needs to be accessible, but your chiropractor will be able to advise you of this.
How many treatments/adjustments will I need?
As you can imagine, this largely depends on a few factors such as how severe the problem is, how long you’ve had it, your age, your general health, your lifestyle in general and many other things. The great news is that, once you’ve had your thorough examination your chiropractor will be able to outline the treatment you need.
Do the adjustments hurt?
The simplest answer to this question is that how much discomfort you feel during your adjustments is often related to how much irritation and inflammation is there already. If you are in a lot of pain when you come in, it is possible that releasing the tissues that are causing your pain may be uncomfortable. However, it is rare that the treatment hurts more than the problem that brought you in!
Always remember that you can communicate with your chiropractor and he or she will make sure that treatment is carried out in line with your preferences. Nothing happens to you if you don’t want it!
Who benefits from chiropractic?
Chiropractic is suitable for everyone from newborn babies, kids, pregnant women to seniors. Your nervous system controls every single cell in your body, and the spinal cord relays the messages from the brain to the body and the body to the brain. If your spine is not functioning properly it can interfere with that communication and eventually lead to a symptom.
This can happen to anyone at any age. Of course, chiropractic adjustments are tailored to the individual, considering factors such as age. Be assured that, whatever your personal circumstances, there is an approach that will be suitable for you.
Can pregnant women have adjustments?
Firstly, if you’re pregnant, YAY! Many congratulations on your pending arrival! Chiropractic care during pregnancy is often very important to the normal physiological function of both the mother and the baby in pregnancy and birth.
Research has shown that chiropractic adjustment during pregnancy can help to shorten labour by allowing more room for the baby to get into the optimal foetal position. It can alleviate morning sickness and minimise joint pain and inflammation. It is perfectly safe to have Chiropractic when pregnant.
Can babies and infants have adjustments?
Our clinic and chiropractic in general have experienced an increasing number of referrals from midwives, health visitors and parents seeking care for their newborn children. With many years of experience with babies and kids, we love treating all ages at Park Street Chiropractic Clinic and really believe we can give them the best start in life!
Whatever the age of your child, chiropractic care can be a safe and effective therapy. We recommend all Mums to bring their little ones in for a free spinal check-up to make sure they are as good as they can be as symptom can be very misleading.
I'm not sure chiropractic is right for me; what should I do?
We offer complimentary 15-minute assessments where you can come and chat to one of our practitioners. This way you can discuss any concerns you have and decide, with the chiropractor, whether chiropractic is the right avenue for you. To arrange a free chat, just give reception a call on 01926 881883 and they will be happy to book you in at a time that suits you.
Will I receive treatment at my first chiropractic appointment?
Generally, no. Treatment is only given at the chiropractor’s discretion. The appointment is specifically designed to investigate and understand the pain you are presenting with. During the initial consultation, we gather a detailed case history and perform a physical examination, in some cases an X-ray may be required. As a result, the chiropractic needs time to draw out the most appropriate plan of action for you. We would never want to give treatment blindly and potentially aggravate any issue further.
What does post-adjustment care look like for me?
After your adjustment, your body begins to adapt to its improved alignment, so a little care goes a long way in helping you get the best results.
Here’s what post-adjustment care typically looks like:
- Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps support your muscles and joints as they settle into their new position.
- Keep moving (gently): Light activity like walking or prescribed stretches can help maintain mobility and prevent stiffness.
- Expect mild soreness: It’s normal to feel a bit tender or achy for 24–48 hours, similar to how you might feel after exercise.
- Be mindful of posture: Paying attention to how you sit, stand, and work can help your adjustment hold for longer.
- Follow your care plan: If we’ve recommended specific exercises or follow-up visits, sticking to these will support your long-term progress.
Everyone responds slightly differently, so your care may be tailored to your specific needs and lifestyle. If anything doesn’t feel right or you have questions after your visit, just get in touch, we’re here to help.
I have pulled a muscle recently - will a massage help?
Firstly, if you have pulled a muscle, please let reception and your practitioner know so they can treat accordingly. Light to moderate massage can definitely help.
I'm not sure whether I need chiropractic or massage therapy - what should I do?
It’s completely normal to be unsure. Both chiropractic care and massage therapy can help, but they’re designed for slightly different needs.
If you’re dealing with joint pain, stiffness, posture issues, or problems related to the spine (like back or neck pain), chiropractic treatment may be the better treatment option.
Massage therapy is ideal if your main concern is muscle tension, stress, or general soreness.
If you’re still unsure, please give us a call – we are happy to point you in the right direction.

I've been going to Park Street Chiropractic Clinic for a number of years now, following some lower back issues. Initially, I was treated by Abbie, who was fantastic in aiding my early recovery, supported superbly a handful of times by Henry when she was on leave. After an initial assessment, I had a course of treatments that involved multiple sessions per week to help get over my injury before transitioning to less frequent ones every six weeks or so to keep me in check. More recently, I've been going to Ellie, who has been amazing at providing regular adjustments and helpful advice that helps keep me in shape, despite the best efforts of my desk job to achieve otherwise. Ellie, as with all of the chiropractors there, is exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful, as well as being very friendly, which helps to make the whole process much more relaxing than one would ordinarily associate with a medical treatment. All of the team, including the chiropractors and reception staff, are incredibly professional, friendly and welcoming, making visits there a pleasure. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Ellie and any of the team at Park Street Chiropractic Clinic.Posted on Google![]()

I can’t thank Ellie enough for the excellent care I have received at Park Street Chiropractic clinic. I could hardly walk on my first appointment due to a back issue. Ellie was empathetic, supportive and patient, it’s taken me 3 months of regular manipulation appointments and now ongoing maintenance to get me back to 90% and back to walking my puppy 😊 Thank you and the whole team for your support.Posted on Google![]()

Having not seen a chiropractor for a long time, I went to see Ellie at Park Street Chiropractic, with chronic neck pain which was stopping me sleeping and impacting daily life. She swiftly recognised the issue and suggested a course of treatment, the impact of which was immediate. Would recommend Ellie and the team wholeheartedly.Posted on Google![]()

I saw Ellie for my hips/back and neck. I was an athlete for years so my joints are a tad hypermobile and Ellie came in like a queen and sorted me out. First visit had tons of relief, second visit had me fully back to normal. She’s an amazing godstar at her job. 10/10 go to her for care. I’ll be going in the future for any concernsPosted on Google![]()

I honestly can't recommend Henry highly enough, the treatment has made a huge difference, and I've been really impressed not only with Henry's knowledge and skill, but his genuine concern for his patients. I have literally recommended him to everyone I know.
