Sciatica
Sciatica Treatment in Leamington Spa & Warwick
Sciatica is one of those symptoms patients describe vividly when they walk into our Leamington Spa clinic. It might be burning, shooting, electric or deeply aching, and it usually travels from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg. At its worst, it can affect sitting, driving across Warwickshire, sleeping and even simple things like putting on a sock. Nerve pain feels alarming, but the good news is that sciatica is often very manageable once we understand what is irritating the nerve.
What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is not a diagnosis on its own. It is a term we use when the sciatic nerve, or one of the nerve roots that feeds into it, becomes irritated. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body, running from the lower spine through the buttock and down the leg. The source of irritation may be a disc, a stiff or overloaded joint in the lower back or pelvis, tight buttock muscles such as the piriformis, or narrowing in the spaces where the nerves travel. Each cause needs a slightly different plan, which is why a thorough assessment matters.
Common signs and symptoms
- Pain running from the lower back or buttock down the leg
- Burning, shooting or electric nerve pain
- Pins and needles or numbness in the leg or foot
- Symptoms that are worse when sitting or driving
- Weakness or a heavy feeling in the affected leg
- Pain usually affecting one side more than the other
Common causes
- Disc irritation or a disc bulge pressing on a nerve root
- Piriformis tension compressing the sciatic nerve
- Stiff or overloaded joints in the lower back or pelvis
- Nerve sensitivity after long periods of sitting
- Pregnancy-related postural and pelvic changes
- Age-related narrowing around the nerve pathway
How we can help at Park Street Chiropractic
At Park Street Chiropractic, our focus is on understand what is causing the nerve irritation. Treatment is then chosen with care. Depending on what we find, your care may include chiropractic spinal adjustments where appropriate, pelvic blocks to gently realign the pelvis and decompress the lower spine, joint mobilisation techniques, and dry needling (acupuncture) for tight buttock and lower back muscles. Deeper hands-on release is available through our separate sports massage therapist when soft tissue work would help.
If lower limb mechanics are pulling on the system, our gait scan (static and dynamic) and custom orthotics service can help reduce repeated strain through the lumbar spine. Where clinically appropriate, on-site digital X-ray imaging can clarify structural factors such as alignment or arthritic change. Alongside hands-on care, you will receive simple, practical advice on sitting, walking and gentle exercises that calm the nerve down.
If sciatic pain is travelling down your leg, book an assessment so we can help identify the most likely cause.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can chiropractic help with sciatica?
Yes. Chiropractic care is a well-established option for mechanical sciatica. By improving movement through the lower back and pelvis, reducing pressure on irritated nerve roots and addressing tight muscles such as the piriformis, many of our patients in Leamington Spa and Warwickshire experience meaningful improvement.
Will sciatica go away on its own?
Some episodes of sciatica do settle with time, gentle movement and good general advice. However, recurrent episodes, persistent pain, or symptoms that include weakness or numbness should not be ignored. A proper assessment helps identify what is driving the problem so that recovery is faster and the chance of it returning is reduced.
Do I need an MRI before chiropractic treatment for sciatica?
Not usually. Most cases of mechanical sciatica can be assessed and treated without an MRI. We only suggest imaging when it is clinically useful or when your symptoms point to something that needs further investigation. In those cases, we will explain why clearly and refer you appropriately.

I've been going to Park Street Chiropractic Clinic for a number of years now, following some lower back issues. Initially, I was treated by Abbie, who was fantastic in aiding my early recovery, supported superbly a handful of times by Henry when she was on leave. After an initial assessment, I had a course of treatments that involved multiple sessions per week to help get over my injury before transitioning to less frequent ones every six weeks or so to keep me in check. More recently, I've been going to Ellie, who has been amazing at providing regular adjustments and helpful advice that helps keep me in shape, despite the best efforts of my desk job to achieve otherwise. Ellie, as with all of the chiropractors there, is exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful, as well as being very friendly, which helps to make the whole process much more relaxing than one would ordinarily associate with a medical treatment. All of the team, including the chiropractors and reception staff, are incredibly professional, friendly and welcoming, making visits there a pleasure. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Ellie and any of the team at Park Street Chiropractic Clinic.Posted on Google![]()

I can’t thank Ellie enough for the excellent care I have received at Park Street Chiropractic clinic. I could hardly walk on my first appointment due to a back issue. Ellie was empathetic, supportive and patient, it’s taken me 3 months of regular manipulation appointments and now ongoing maintenance to get me back to 90% and back to walking my puppy 😊 Thank you and the whole team for your support.Posted on Google![]()

Having not seen a chiropractor for a long time, I went to see Ellie at Park Street Chiropractic, with chronic neck pain which was stopping me sleeping and impacting daily life. She swiftly recognised the issue and suggested a course of treatment, the impact of which was immediate. Would recommend Ellie and the team wholeheartedly.Posted on Google![]()

I saw Ellie for my hips/back and neck. I was an athlete for years so my joints are a tad hypermobile and Ellie came in like a queen and sorted me out. First visit had tons of relief, second visit had me fully back to normal. She’s an amazing godstar at her job. 10/10 go to her for care. I’ll be going in the future for any concernsPosted on Google![]()

I honestly can't recommend Henry highly enough, the treatment has made a huge difference, and I've been really impressed not only with Henry's knowledge and skill, but his genuine concern for his patients. I have literally recommended him to everyone I know.
