When asked “what do chiropractors do?” most people would say that they treat back pain or fix bad necks.
This is certainly the bulk of what we do at Park Street Chiropractic. However, our treatments, which consist of a combination of manipulation, soft tissue work, advice and exercises, can be applied to a wide range of musculoskeletal problems.
Everyone knows that correction and prevention are better than simple short-term pain relief. It is in the best interest of our patients that we offer a complete solution to your problem, wherever possible.
Therefore, our chiropractors take time to thoroughly assess not only what your problem is, but also why it is there. With this information, we can design personal corrective programs to suit you. These consist of two main areas of focus. These are:
1. What we can do to help you (in the form of treatment)
2. What you can do for yourself (in the form of exercises and stretches, as well as lifestyle modifications)
Our main focus is on the identification of the cause of aches and pains from a functional perspective. Our job is to allow our patients to get back to what they enjoy as quickly as possible. After all, it’s all about quality of life!
What to expect when you see one of our chiropractors
From the first minute you walk into our clinic, the emphasis will be on you. We are dedicated to providing you and your family a world class service. We will request you fill our patient form. This provides us with general information about yourself and your current health.
Next you will have a consultation with our Chiropractor to discuss your health-related problems, concerns, as well as potential treatment options. Your first visit is designed for the Chiropractor to learn more about you, your condition and your expectations to determine whether chiropractic care will meet your goals.
Your Chiropractor will perform a complete chiropractic examination testing your reflexes as well as other standard neurologic, orthopaedic, postural, and physical examinations. No treatment will be performed in the clinic without your full, informed consent.
Your specific condition may require us to take x-rays to get a full evaluation. X-rays help us rule out more serious conditions or assist us in developing the most effective treatment plan for you. Most patients are amazed once they see their x-rays, and can often identify their misalignments and degeneration themselves.
Once all the information and examinations have been performed, your Chiropractor will give you a report of findings to answer the three most popular questions: Can you help me? How long will it take? How much is it going to cost?
After discussing with you your history and your goals, examining your spine and other soft tissue related areas and reviewing any x-rays or tests, your Chiropractor will discuss recommendations with you.
If you have a condition that requires care with other providers, the chiropractic doctor will tell you. If your Chiropractor believes we can help you, he/she will recommend treatment and a wellness program.
The first challenge is to get you out of pain, and the second challenge after that is to correct, strengthen and rehabilitate your spine and get it and your muscles and nerves working well together. The third challenge is all about maintaining good spinal health and keeping you from falling back to where you were when you first came to the clinic.
Frequently asked questions and further information
Chiropractic is a primary health-care profession that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and overall management of conditions that are due to problems with the joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves, especially related to the spine.
Chiropractic treatment mainly involves safe, often gentle, specific spinal manipulation to free joints in the spine or other areas of the body that are not moving properly. Apart from manipulation, chiropractors may use a variety of techniques including ice, heat, ultrasound, exercise and acupuncture as well as advice about posture and lifestyle.
Although chiropractors are best known for treating back and neck pain, which they do very well, patients also consult chiropractors regarding a range of other, related conditions.
Chiropractic adjustment is a procedure in which trained specialists (chiropractors) use their hands or a small instrument to apply a controlled, specific force to a spinal joint. The goal of chiropractic adjustment, also known as spinal manipulation, is to correct structural alignment and improve your body’s physical function by relieving nerve interference.
At Park Street Chiropractic Clinic we use a number of highly effective adjustment techniques such as Diversified, SOT, Activator, dry needling and different forms of soft tissue releases.
Many people are particularly interested in the cracking or popping sound that occurs when we adjust a joint. This is simply a small release of air in the joint and is perfectly harmless. In fact, it doesn’t matter whether it clicks or not. Research showed that the click, or absence of it, made no difference to how quickly people got better. So if it clicks, don’t worry; if it doesn’t click, don’t worry!
The research did show, however, that patients were slightly more satisfied when they heard a click! Perhaps people secretly like all the clicking!
When you first see us as a new patient, your chiropractor will need to be able to assess your spine and other joints and muscles properly. This means that you will be asked to undress – all female patients will be given a gown to put over their undergarments, which opens at the back. If you would be more comfortable, please feel free to wear shorts and a sports vest, as long as the spine can be seen.
For regular adjustments you will usually be able to keep all your clothes on. There are some exceptions, such as if a particular body part needs to be accessible, but your chiropractor will be able to advise you of this.
As you can imagine, this largely depends on a number of factors such as how severe the problem is, how long you’ve had it, your age, your general health, your lifestyle in general and many other things. The great news is that, once you’ve had your thorough examination your chiropractor will be able to outline the treatment you need.
The simplest answer to this question is that how much discomfort you feel during your adjustments is often related to how much irritation and inflammation is there already. If you are in a lot of pain when you come in, it is possible that releasing the tissues that are causing your pain may be uncomfortable. However, it is rare that the treatment hurts more than the problem that brought you in!
Always remember that you can communicate with your chiropractor and he or she will make sure that treatment is carried out in line with your preferences. Nothing happens to you if you don’t want it!
Chiropractic is suitable for everyone from newborn babies, kids, pregnant women to seniors. Your nervous system controls every single cell in your body and the spinal cord relays the messages from the brain to the body and the body to the brain. If your spine is not functioning properly it can interfere with that communication and eventually lead to a symptom.
This can happen to anyone at any age. Of course, chiropractic adjustments are tailored to the individual, taking into account factors such as age. Be assured that, whatever your personal circumstances, there is an approach that will be suitable for you.
Firstly, if you’re pregnant, YAY! Many congratulations on your pending arrival! Chiropractic care during pregnancy is often very important to the normal physiological function of both the mother and the baby in pregnancy and birth.
Research has shown that chiropractic adjustment during pregnancy can help to shorten labour by allowing more room for the baby to get into the optimal foetal position. It can alleviate morning sickness and minimise joint pain and inflammation. It is perfectly safe to have Chiropractic when pregnant.
